Recap of Praxis Presentations at ISCoS and National SCI Conference

Praxis was pleased to attend the annual ISCoS meeting in Sweden and the National SCI Conference in Toronto. At both conferences, our team joined leaders, researchers, clinicians, and people with lived experience (PLEX) of SCI to exchange insights and strengthen partnerships that advance our mission. These conferences provided valuable opportunities to share and learn about the latest innovations in clinical care, rehabilitation, and patient engagement, while also showcasing Praxis’ commitment to elevating PLEX perspectives to drive real-world impact in SCI research and care.

  • At the ISCoS meeting, 7 presentations (posters, workshops) were held by a Praxis team member or on work supported by Praxis.
  • At the National SCI meeting, Praxis led a 2-hour update meeting with our registry network, hosted a pre-conference workshop on neuromodulation, and sponsored Peter Athanasopoulos keynote speech on lived experience.
  • Praxis also exhibited a booth, presented 3 workshops and 11 posters, with one winning first place in the Knowledge Generation Category.

A Summary of Topics Presented:

  • Championing Person-Centred Care – Engage meaningfully with PLEX, integrate their perspective into healthcare standard, collect evidence on lived experience (InSCI survey, pediatric, menopause, non-traumatic SCI, patient-reported outcome measures), address challenges in living with SCI such as housing services and essential needs.
  • Improving Clinical Care with Best practice – Assess SCI severity using ISNCSCI, track functional recovery (standing and walking), and apply guidelines for neuromodulation therapies such as spinal stimulation, activity-based therapy (ABT) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling.
  • Supporting Research and Care with Innovative Tools – ISNCSCI Algorithm App, bladder continence prediction algorithm, simulation model for recovery, economic model to calculate the real cost of living with SCI.

  3. The Canadian International Spinal Cord Injury (InSCI) community survey: Describing employment after SCI and associated factors
  4. Surgical procedures after paediatric traumatic SCI in the United States: A national inpatient study
  5. Paediatric traumatic SCI in Ontario, Canada: Incidence and cohort characterization
  6. Bridging the knowledge gap: addressing perimenopause/menopause in women with SCI or disorder
  7. Incidence of non-traumatic SCI in Canada
  8. Implementation of SCI-QOL Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in SCI rehabilitation: Results and insights
  9. Navigating housing services and supports in Ontario following SCI/dysfunction

Improving Clinical Care with Best practice

  1. The ISNCSCI assessment in non-traumatic SCI: Insights from inpatient rehabilitation
  2. Validity and responsiveness of the SCI functional ambulation profile in sub-acute SCI
  3. The Standing and Walking Assessment Tool (SWAT): Comparison of stage change during inpatient rehabilitation in persons with traumatic SCI and non-traumatic SCI
  4. Understanding the effects of concomitant traumatic brain injury on walking and balance outcomes in individuals with SCI
  5. Neuromodulation pre-course workshop: Role of evidence-based protocols to support implementation
  6. Developing a Canadian clinical best practice guideline for activity-based therapy
  7. Implementation strategies to translate evidence-based applications of electrical stimulation into clinical practice for people living with SCI

Supporting Research and Care with Innovative Tools

  1. Integrating ISNCSCI into clinical care using innovative tools, advanced technologies, and interactive learning
  2. Validation of the lower extremity motor score (LEMS) as a predictor of bladder continence 1-year after traumatic SCI
