Promoting Disability Inclusion in Politics: The Importance of Including Voices with Lived Experience

Good policy begins by including the voices of those most affected.

Praxis Spinal Cord Institute is pleased to share a recent article by Kevin Murphy, Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships, published in The Parliamentarian. Drawing on his experience as the first person with a disability elected as Speaker of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, Kevin explores why meaningful disability inclusion is essential to creating stronger public policy.

The article explores a critical gap in policymaking: the continued underrepresentation of persons with disabilities in the rooms where decisions are made. It reinforces a simple but powerful idea: policy is stronger, more relevant and more equitable when it is shaped with the people it impacts, not just for them.

Thought leadership like this helps shine a light on structural barriers and challenges us to move beyond intent toward tangible change. As we continue building inclusive systems, we must continue to push for approaches that centre lived experience and influence at every level.

At Praxis, we believe that lived experience is fundamental to advancing research, innovation, and policy. Kevin’s article reflects our commitment to ensuring that people with spinal cord injury and other disabilities are not only consulted, but are active partners in shaping the systems and policies that affect their lives.
