What We Do

Centering lived experience in education.

We deliver specialized clinical education (workshops and webinars) focused on spinal cord injury (SCI) care across British Columbia. Our education sessions bring together:

  1. Healthcare professionals
  2. Persons with lived experience (PLEX)

PLEX participation is central to every workshop, grounding the education in real-life experiences, practical strategies, and meaningful collaboration.

Why It Matters

Closing the care gap for every community

Access to specialized SCI care in Canada is often limited to major urban centers. For individuals living in rural or remote areas, this gap means:

  • Difficulty accessing expert care
  • Increased reliance on self-advocacy

By empowering regional clinicians with the skills and confidence to provide person-centered care, we aim to:

  • Reduce health disparities
  • Prevent secondary complications
  • Improve quality of life for people living with SCI

How Praxis Makes It Happen

Real voices. Real strategies. Real impact.

We partner with organizations like SCI BC, Accessible Okanagan, and GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre to design and deliver interactive sessions that reflect real-world experiences. Guided by Integrated Knowledge Translation (IKT) principles, we ensure the PLEX’s voices are central to the learning process, helping clinicians understand SCI realities and deliver truly person-centred care – aligning with the SCI Standard.

Our workshop features:

  • SCI 101: Learn the fundamentals of SCI and related health considerations.
  • PLEX Panels: Hear real stories from community members living with SCI.
  • Family Perspectives: Gain insights from families supporting loved ones with SCI.
  • Indigenous PLEX Perspectives: Hear directly from Indigenous leaders and PLEX about barriers, racism in health care, remote access, and culturally safe care.
  • Pressure Injury Prevention: Discover strategies, equipment needs, and lived experiences to prevent complications.
  • Specialized Equipment & Adaptive Recreation: Explore tools, technologies, and services that enhance independence and accessibility.
  • Bowel & Bladder: Understand neurogenic bowel and bladder physiology, management options, and the psychosocial impacts of these changes.
  • Sexual Health: Learn how SCI affects sexual function, fertility, and pleasure, and explore adaptations and strategies for a fulfilling sexual life.
