Invitation to Submit Your Views

Everyone is welcome to review and comment on CAN/HSO S3402:2022 (E) Integrated People-Centred Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program standard before it is published. HSO will use the feedback to improve the standard with guidance from the Technical Committee overseeing the development.

This standard is a revision of HSO S3402:2018 (E) Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Services. It was revised to ensure it remains relevant to health and social service organizations. This standard aims to improve the quality and integration of SCI rehabilitation programs across the care continuum. It does not prescribe the use of a particular approach or treatment, but rather focuses on how a comprehensive, continuous, and integrated SCI rehabilitation program can meet the needs of persons with SCI and designated support persons who are served by a health system or care setting.

The public review of the revised standard will take place from February 28, 2022 to April 28, 2022.

This standard was developed in partnership with Praxis Spinal Cord Institute.

About the standard

The standard is designed to:
• Improve the quality of life for persons with lived SCI experience
• Establish the best practices for organizations and teams that provide care to persons with SCI
• Foster integration across the continuum of care to improve outcomes and experiences for persons with SCI

The standard is divided into the following sections:
1. Involvement of persons with lived SCI experience
2. Integrated systems of care
3. Acute SCI care
4. Ongoing rehabilitation care and services
5. Specific age group considerations
6. Community reintegration
7. Research, monitoring, and quality improvement

Target audience

This standard has been developed to be used across the SCI rehabilitation care continuum, from acute care to community reintegration. The standard applies to all persons with SCI regardless of age (i.e. pediatric, adult, aging) or cause of injury (i.e. traumatic and non-traumatic).

Development process

This standard is being developed as a National Standard of Canada following the Standards Council of Canada’s rigorous development process.

CAN/HSO S3402:2022 (E) Integrated People-Centred Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program has been developed using the best available evidence by the HSO Spinal Cord Injury Technical Committee. Technical Committee members include people with lived experience with spinal cord injuries, clinicians and health service administrators, government and health services stakeholders, and researchers.

HSO is asking everyone who has an interest in this standard, such as people who have experience using health services, health and social service providers, leaders in health and social service organizations, and others who have expertise in this subject matter, for their views on the proposed standard.

What happens next?

The Technical Committee will review and consider each comment received and will incorporate feedback as applicable. HSO expects to release the final version of the standard later this year.
